"Riding a horse is not a gentle hobby, to be picked up and put down like a game of solitaire. It is a grand passion. It seizes a person whole and once it has done so, he will have to accept that his life will be radically changed."

Can Bill Northern Really Talk to Horses?

"Horses look down on us; they think we're around to service them," said Northern. "If you're late bringing their food, a horse thinks, 'what's the matter with that so-and-so?' And dogs think, 'What did I do wrong to deserve a late meal.' Dogs will go out of their way not to hurt your feelings. And cats will think, 'Dinner's late, I better go kill something!' "

We have a follow up on a story we first brought you last week regarding two horses that were shot in rural Comfrey. The Brown County Sheriff's Office reports that an account for assisting with medical bills has been set up at the Alliance Bank. Their address is: 322 North Minnesota street, New Ulm, Minnesota 56073. Checks should be made out to the Jane Slander/help the horses account. The horses were shot in two separate incidents and are expected to recover. No arrests have been made in the case yet.

Two horses shot in the head near Comfrey

Associated Press

COMFREY, Minn.— Two horses are recovering after being shot in the head in a Brown County pasture.
One of the horses was shot on Dec. 5, and the second was shot two days later at a farm near Comfrey, according to the Brown County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies suspect the same person is responsible for shooting both horses. No arrests have been made.

Owner Jane Slander said both of the horses had tracheotomies and lost a lot of blood, but are recovering. Veterinarian Kathy Ott said she expects it wall take four to six months for the wounds to heal.

Anyone with any information on the shootings can call the Brown County Sheriff's Office at 507-233-6700.

Article:  Is it Fat or Is it HAY BELLY?
Lunching with Jeff Kiewatt was like a shot of adrenaline to my information-starved mind….so much information, so little time to absorb it all!!  While the main article on Jeff’s endeavors in horse health and education is still waiting to be written, the information that stole my attention after the first hour of our lunch was the term “hay belly”.  Does the term refer to a "fat" horse?  What does the term mean?  Well, according to Jeff, it literally means, “hay in the horse’s belly”.   To understand the term you must understand the digestive system of the horse.  So…Are You Ready?  CLICK HERE to learn more!

Waiting in the doctor's office can be very boring.  I picked up a Good Housekeeping magazine and was very surprised to find an great article in their July 2006 issue about a blind mare given to a girl and their successes.  The article kept my attention (and my heart) and pretty soon I was out of the reception area and in the small room, still reading, waiting for the doctor.  What a great article...  Here is an on-line article about Blind Beauty and her friend Jenna.... enjoy...and if you're sitting in the doctor's office and see the July Issue of Good Housekeeping pick it up and read the article!

Just for the heck of it, I searched for more "blind beauty" stories and came across this one from Helena, Montana.

Juveniles charged in livestock shootings

Why?  What were they thinking?  It seems so senseless....  The community is coming together, though, to show support for those who lost their horses and cow.  They're having a meeting in the Living Hope Ministry Center, located across the street from St. Francis Senior High School in downtown St. Francis this Saturday, at 9:30 am.

The boys also allegedly burned a home as well.  Here is a video from WCCO.com
http://www.wcco.com/video/?id=14443@wcco.dayport.com. (High Speed connections only.  The video will bog down dial-up!)

I looked outside and thanked God that my horses were alive and well....I think they all deserve a big hug at chores this morning!

WONDER WHAT EVER HAPPENED to those two juvenile boys that shot horses, a cow, and burned a home?  The Isanti County News forwarded this article:
