Animal Acupuncture
is now available at the Nicollet Veterinary Clinic

Charlotte Gallagher, RN L.Ac.
working with Dr. Beckendorf & Dr. Schauberger

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into the body at specific points, which have been empirically proven effective in the treatment of specific disorders.  These points have been mapped on pathways or meridians, and used successfully for over 2,000 years on animals as well as humans.

How does acupuncture work?

Western medicine has just recently begun to research acupuncture, so as of yet, acupuncture is not understood from a western perspective.  According to Chinese Medicine, disease is an imbalance of energy (Qi) in the body.  Acupuncture therapy is based on balancing the energy, correcting the flow of energy and thereby restoring balance, or health, to the animal.

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is one of the safest therapies available, rarely do side effects occur.

Please Note:
An initial physical examination/assessment will need to be done by Nicollet Veterinary Clinic's Drs. Beckendorf or Schauberger prior to referral for acupuncture.

Charlotte Gallagher is a licensed acupuncturist and founder of Health Options Acupuncture Clinic in Mankato.

Charlotte graduated from the Minnesota Institute of Acupuncture and Herbal Studies in 1993, where she trained in human Chinese Medicine.  In the spring of 2000, Charlotte completed certification in animal acupuncture at the Traditional Acupuncture Institute in Maryland.

Is acupuncture painful?

Acupuncture is performed with sterile stainless steel needles.  There is occasionally a brief moment of sensitivity as the needle penetrates the skin.  Once the needles are in place, most animals relax often falling asleep during the treatment.

How many acupuncture treatments will be needed?

Treatments may last from 10 seconds to 30 minutes depending on the method used and the individual animal response.  Generally, 5-15 treatments are adequate for the majority of chronic ailments.  Often acute conditions require a single treatment and some degenerative conditions require scores of treatments.

What problems can be treated with acupuncture?

Acupuncture is commonly used for:
·
MUSCULOSKELETAL problems (arthritis, disc disease, hip dysplasia)
·
SKIN problems (lick granulomas, allergies)
·
NERVOUS DISORDERS (nerve injury, paralysis) RESPIRATORY problems (asthmas, sinusitis)
·
DIGESTIVE DISORDERS (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation)
