RECYCLING FOR HORSES!  Click Here.
   August 2010

Has everyone had enough humidity lately?  Whoa all this wet stuff is making for a great "Skeeter" crop this year.

Skeeter and fly season really keeps the tails swinging out in the pasture. Bruce and I join in - well, in our own way by wearing  jackets out for horse chores to keep from getting all bit up by the mosquitoes and swinging the jackets over our heads and all around us as we wait for the horses to finish their meals.  Must be a funny sight from the road.

Little Boy is still convinced that he has to trot over and taste everyone else's meals.  He knows he isn't supposed to but goes right over to someone else's feed pan and grabs a mouthful while trotting around to the outside.  He is a sneaky one by waiting until you are busy tending to another horse. Then when caught in the act, he scampers away like crazy!  Funny how his little legs never miss a beat as he grabs a bite on the run.

Summer has been pretty darned hot but the horses really handle the heat well.  Most days, they stay in their shelters during the heat of the day and come out in the slightly cooler evening air.

Shadow may have to be re-tested for her Cushing's disease. It seems that her coat wants to grow longer again even though she remains on her pergolide.  That decision will be up to the Dr though.

Lucky has decided that she would rather have April's oats instead of her own feed.   Just as Montana must try both his food and BJ's and then decide which one he wants.  Such a folly meal times can be at Misfit Acres.

We would like to thank Dan W. and Susan W. for the kind donations.   Dan had some hay bales he was not going to use and Susan provided many medical supplies she had no use for.   The help is great!

We were scampering for hay earlier but now have a good start on our winter supply.  It has been a challenging year for many hay makers trying to dodge the rains.  We have 44 round bales in storage right now which means we need approximately 20 more to see the upcoming winter through.

We had to miss a couple town festivals due to the rains but are on track for  Kernel Days in Wells, MN, on August 21 and 22.  We are also scheduled for the  Arts n' More Festival on September 11 in Amboy.  And you won't want to miss the Younger Brothers Capture in Madelia on September 18.  Misfit Acres will be there but additionally Bruce has joined the Elm Creek Cowboy Theater Company and will be participating in the Younger Brothers Capture Re-enactment.

September 25 be sure to join us at Midtown Tavern in Mankato, MN for a special benefit for the Sanctuary Horses of Misfit Acres!!  Angry Waters Band has offered to provide us with music and we are putting together some activities for the day.  This will be a day time event to make it family friendly.  Please watch our website for more details as we get them ironed out.

October 3 is our annual biggie.   As we are  printing up flyers announcing this, it is so hard to believe that this is our 8th annual function!   We have been working very hard securing silent auction items and a wide variety of items have already arrived.  Thus far, we have a variety of gift certificates, a trolling motor, home decor items - just to name a few. If you would like donate any items, we would surely appreciate any and all.

We are very excited to see the finished quilt Jan E. is making for Misfit Acres this year - we got a little sneak preview of the design and it is lovely! Jan's fine work is always a success at the fundraiser.  Please remember to join us on October 3 in Good Thunder - you may be the winner of Jan's quilt!

We are going to try to attend the new open air market in Mankato (located at the old Embers Restaurant site) a few weekends as time allows.  This a is new venture for the city with vendors and crafters displaying their items on Saturdays and Sundays through the end of October.  Hours for these shows are Sat - 10 - 4 and Sun 11 - 4.

We close August with a reminder to simply give us a call should you want to visit Misfit Acres and meet all the furry residents.  You would be most welcome!

Until September!
