January 2012

WaHoo - what a way to end 2011!!   On Christmas Eve morning, Misfit Acres received a grant for $1000 from the Foley Conservation Foundation.  How wonderful it that?  The week after Christmas, we were notified that the ASPCA is fulfilling out grant request for $2000 for hay.  New Years Eve day, the horses received another $420 in donations.   As if all this isn't great enough, on Jan 4, the Hugs and Kisses Animal Fund sent $600.  We feel very truly blessed!

The saga of our skinny BJ continues though.  We may be seeing some long-awaited progress with his weight issues.  Thanks to great advice from our farrier and our feed man, we have put BJ on calf-manna to help build his weight.  He has only been on it for a short time, but it appears that he is responding and starting to put on a few much-needed pounds.  And we are thrilled about that!  Between this great weather we are having and the additional supplement things seem to be in his favor.  Since he and Montana are in the same pasture, Montana is also getting the supplement.  There is a marked difference in his mealtime behavior too.  He just seems so much more satisfied and leaves BJ alone usually.

Shadow is being a little pill about her medication.  She has decided lately that she does not want it and will not finish her feed when she discovers the medication.  We are trying a whole slug of different ways to hide it in her feed but horses are quite clever.  We may have to resort to using an oral syringe but she hates that to!  One day we will hit the right combination.

Augie, Magic, Lucky, April, and Little Boy are our carefree bunch.  As long as the feed arrives on time and there is plenty of hay, they are quite content. Little Boy likes to get into things when he can just for entertainment it seems.  He loves to nip at the insulators when the fencer is not on and then graduates to rubbing on them knocking them down.  Between that activity and climbing inside the round bale feeder, he is a handful!

Peanut, Dixie, and Faith are very quiet horses.  They prefer to just hang out by the round bale feeder.  They don't ask for much from life!

Spring must be in the air!  We got our invitation to attend the Wells Gun and Trader show on March 10 & 11 at the Wells, MN, high school.  This has been a great event for Misfit Acres in the past couple years so we are looking forward to attending again.  We are planning to apply for a raffle permit and begin our annual raffle at this event.

This pretty wells sums up our January column for you!  As always, should you wish to meet the Sanctuary Horses of Misfit Acres, please give us a call!!

Until February!
